Arequipa (2'335 meters above sea level - 7'500 ft) is located 1'024 km south of Lima, taking the highway. It is considered Peru's most beautiful colonial city. It is known as the "White City" because of the color of "sillar", a white volcanic rock that was used to build ancient houses and churches. In this fertile green valley dominated by volcano Misti, the Inca warriors decided to settle down and build a city. Centuries after, the Spanish conquistadors also chose it to settle down in, making it the most important city during the colonial era. It's major attractions are: the churches, the colonial mansions and Santa Catalina church, open to the public after centuries of being cloistered due to its religious nature.
