Upon your arrival, our naturalist guide will welcome you at the airport and transfer you to our boat. We will reach the refuge by boat through Tambopata river. En route, we will observe the difference in vegetation, from colonized and deforested areas to the virgin rainforest. Once at the refuge, we will serve you a welcome drink, on us. After a nice lunch, we will have an introductory tour to Terra Firme forest, behind Tambopata Lodge (footpath #2). This part of the forest is dominated by giant Brazil nut trees and Chihuahuaco trees. The most visible mammals here are the black-mantled tamarin and the tufted capuchin, among other animal species. We will also observe the local flora. After dinner, we will have a nocturnal walk to spot some of the animals and insects that can be found thanks to the gleams of reflection from their eyes.
After breakfast, we will have a 4-hour motorboat ride to the deepest area of the reserve, where we will find the collpa (clay river wall). This macaw collpa is the biggest along Tambopata river. After lunch, our guide will take us for a walk to explore the footpath system of the area. Camping night on the beach near the collpa.
We will leave the camp very early in the morning to the collpas so that we arrive before the macaws. They come to this place in search of salts, minerals and other digestive properties of clay. Hundreds of macaws and parrots visit the collpa every day. Some of the birds we will see here are: the scarlet macaw, the blue and yellow macaw, the red and green macaw, the blue-headed parrot, etc. This macaw collpa is considered to be one of the biggest in the world! After lunch in the camping site, we will return to the footpath system to search for some of the nine monkey species in the area (including the spider monkey, the squirrel monkey and the titi monkey) as well as big mammals (like the tapir, the peccary and the jaguar). Camping night on the beach near the collpa.
This will be our second opportunity to witness the wonders of the macaw collpa. After breakfast, we will have a short motorboat ride to the beginning of the footpath. Once there, we will start our walk to explore Condenado lake. This lake is known for being home to many birds and aquatic animals, as well as giant otter families, that live there and are easy to spot. Some of the birds that can be found there are: tiger herons, white herons, wattled jacanas, hoatzins, black-capped donacobius, among others. Remember to bring a hat and sun lotion because there is no shade in the lake. Then, we will return to the refuge to have dinner. After, our guide will talke us on a boat ride through Tambopata river in search of caimans and other nocturnal animals. Accommodations for the night at Tambopata Eco Lodge.
We will transfer you from the Eco Lodge to the city of Puerto Maldonado so that you can board your plane. For this, we will assist you in Puerto Maldonado until your plane has taken off.
